Kayaking can be a very safe activity but it takes a little skill, training, research, experience and self-awareness to be competently and reliably safe. Not to mention a bit of common sense. Our view at Ocean River is that knowledge and training are the most important part of safety. We provide kayak courses and training for every skill level — from introductory kayaking through to advanced techniques and rescues. We believe that a proper introduction and thorough training in sea kayaking will help you enjoy a lifetime of safe paddling. Novice kayakers are particularly vulnerable to adverse weather and water conditions. A good knowledge of wind, waves, and currents is essential for safe trip planning. It’s important as well to be aware of your limits and skill level, and to stay within them. Always make sure you know what you are getting into at the beginning of a trip and don’t expose yourself to conditions that are beyond your skills.
We strongly encourage you to always paddle with at least one other person so that there is someone available to assist in the event of a capsize. You should also learn and practice some form of self-rescue in case your partner cannot assist you, or if you find yourself alone.
